Neurologist, John Schafer, MD, awarded Heart of Gold award

On April 2, MedClinic neurologist John Schafer, MD, will receive the American Heart Association’s Heart of Gold award, presented each year to a physician who has been instrumental in advancing Sacramento as a center for medical research and treatment.

Dr. Schafer has spent years educating healthcare professionals and the community about the latest therapies available, and was involved in the emergence of Sacramento as a center of excellence in the treatment of stroke. As the medical director of the stroke program at Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Dr. Schafer has been instrumental in establishing the Mercy Stroke Center as the community standard in stroke care. His contributions also helped lead Mercy San Juan to become one of the first hospitals in the state to receive primary stroke center certification from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

Dr. Schafer has been a member of the MedClinic Medical Group for more than 10 years and is assistant clinical professor of neurology at University of California, Davis. He has been involved with the American Heart Association (AHA) since the early 1980s. He served two terms as president of the AHA local board of directors before moving on to the board representing California, Utah and Nevada. He was on the Advisory Council for the American Stroke Association and remains active on the Affiliate Stroke Task Force.

He was co-chair of the Sacramento Metro Stroke Task Force when it formed in 1997 as one of five sites around the country pioneering efforts to educate the public about stroke risk and the latest in stroke therapies. In 1987, Dr. Schafer became the first recipient of Mercy San Juan’s Lloyd D. Bowles, MD, Distinguished Service Award, an award honoring a physician who demonstrates a commitment to clinical excellence and community involvement, and who symbolizes the spirit and compassion of the Sisters of Mercy.
